Financial advisors nearly always ask us how they can improve their social media presence and engagement. If it feels like your company’s social media posts don’t reach very many people, you’re not wrong. For any “free” post on your business account (as opposed to “boosted” or paid), you can expect very few followers to actually see your post show up in their newsfeed due to algorithms. Here’s how it breaks out:
- Facebook Pages: Approximately 1–2% of your followers will see your post
- LinkedIn Company Pages: Approximately 1.5–2% of followers will see your post
- Instagram: Approximately 3–6% of your followers will see your post
Luckily, getting more of your free, organic social media posts seen and liked is possible, and you’re probably holding the answer in your hand right now. We have found that advisors who post more candid photos get better results. Short videos are also excellent.
It’s easy to get in the habit of taking pictures, and candid, fun entertaining content is often well received, but always run posts through your firm’s compliance process before publishing. If you need some ideas, consider staff birthday photos, selfies and behind-the scenes office photos, your dog doing something funny or just looking cute, community outreach or volunteer pictures, a photo of the current book you are reading, you and your staff attending an industry conference, a vacation photo, a wedding photo, a new baby photo, the best lunch item on the menu at your favorite local spot… the list is long! For any photo that includes clients, get written consent and confirm your firm permits client images on social before posting.
So, remember this one takeaway: if you want to improve your social presence, photos are key. If we post for you, make it a priority to take and send us pictures at least once a month. Social media is designed to be social. People like working with people they feel they know and like personally, and candid photos are a visual view into your world as an advisor and person. Make it a priority to share more of yourself.
